ITS Campus, ITS News – As a country with the largest Muslim population globally, the need for halal-certified food and beverages is a basic need in Indonesia. For this reason, The Students Community Outreach Program (KKN Abmas) of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) helps Medium, Small, and Micro Enterprises (MSMEs/UMKM) to achieve halal certification and help promote their products.
Herdayanto Sulistyo Putro SSi MSi, as the team leader, said that halal certification is essential to increase public trust in the products. He also explained that the UMKM assisted by his team, Bhumi Cantya Indonesia, is a small enterprise that processed family medicine plants (toga) into ready-to-use beverage products. “The products include ginger powder, ginger powder, and temulawak instant drinks,” he said.
To help partners in the halal certification process, Danang explained that his team facilitates partners to participate in training. The training contained material on business license registration, halal certification registration procedures, and sharia finance. In addition, Danang and his team also accompany partners during the halal certification registration process to the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH).
The lecturer from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Data Analytical (FSAD) ITS said his team also carried out the Movement Towards Halal Certification (GEMESH) campaign with the slogan “Let’s go halal!”. This slogan invites all MSMEs to be more aware of the importance of halal certification. His team and partners collaborated with Sociodigio, an experienced digital marketing consultant to support the campaign.
Danang said that Sociodigio helped compile planning and application from planning, implementation, evaluation, and reporting of the e-commerce digital campaign strategies. The collaboration is hoped that the tendency to do business online will increase with a touch of conceptualized digital marketing technology. “This collaboration is a form of synergy between academics, the community, and assisted business actors,” he explained.
In addition to an online campaign, Danang also encourages partners to participate in several offline exhibitions to promote their products. One of them is the K-UMKM Expo 2021 exhibition on 15 -19 September. This exhibition is essential so that MSMEs assisted by ITS can spread awareness to the broader community about their existence in the market.
Even though Danang and his team conducted the assistance online because of the pandemic, they were still enthusiastic about halal certification. Furthermore, Danang and his team hope for the success of Bhumi Cantya Indonesia’s MSMEs in becoming the pioneers of the halal certification program. “With the GEMESH campaign, we want other MSMEs to follow in the footsteps of partners and immediately take care of halal certification of their products,” he said hopefully.
