ITS Campus, ITS News – Facing the peak of the third wave of the pandemic caused by the omicron variant virus, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) shows a dedicated effort by providing an individual isolation room for its academics, especially students, who were confirmed to have Covid-19. They will receive not only a room but also various medical treatments. Start from doctors, medicines, vitamins, and healthy foods to support their recovery.
The proposal for the independent isolation room itself was initiated by ITS Vice-Chancellors, ITS Covid Task Force, ITS Medical Center, ITS Student Directorate, ITS Education Directorate, other ITS stakeholders, and supported by the ITS Alumni Association and ITS Manarul Ilmi Mosque Foundation through a meeting held specifically. “ITS is moving fast. Not any day later since a case reported, the room was immediately opened and immediately occupied,” said Yeyes Mulyadi, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. , Head of the ITS Independent Isolation Room Provision Team.
The former head of the ITS Student Affairs Task Force explained that currently, he allocated Wisma Bougenville ITS as an individual isolation room that can accommodate up to 21 people. Preparing a backup, if the demand for space keeps increasing, ITS also provides one room at the ITS Pertamina GOR.
To unite and assist the recovery of students who tested positive for Covid-19, ITS provides medicines according to the doctor’s recommendation from the ITS Medical Center. Once placed in the room, they will receive regular health assessments until declared healthy again. “We also ensure that they fulfilled their nutritional needs by sending food three times a day with a medically-consulted menu,” he added.
Yeyes continued that the independent isolation rooms are for those with mild symptoms. Meanwhile, for those with severe symptoms or congenital diseases (comorbidities), the campus will immediately direct the patient to partner hospitals such as the Haji General Hospital (RSU) and Bangkalan Field Emergency Hospital (RSDLB).
Most residents of the rooms are students who stay in Surabaya to attend face-to-face lectures at ITS. However, they were not allowed to live in the boarding house by the owner because they were confirmed to have Covid-19.
Based on examinations done by medical personnel, on average, students with mild symptoms are declared cured within seven days. Up until now, the number of students in the individual isolation room are five. The number of isolated students has decreased compared to the early weeks of the peak increase in cases of the omicron variant of the Covid-19 variant.
Responding to the ongoing pandemic, the Marine Engineering Department lecturer emphasized that ITS will provide the best treatment continuously. For this reason, he advised all ITS academics to remain calm and continue to maintain health protocols both inside and outside the campus environment. “Raise individual awareness of the importance of health protocols because this pandemic is not over,” he concluded.
