Campus ITS, ITS News – Until now, there are only around 10,900 engineers officially recognized in Indonesia, even though the number of engineering graduates and their cohorts exceeds 1 million people. Contributing to overcoming the imbalance in the engineering profession, the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) through the Professional Engineer Study Program (PSPPI) inaugurated 93 new engineers, Saturday (16/4) afternoon.
The Inauguration of Engineers for Graduates of the ITS Professional Engineer Professional Program for the Odd Semester of the Academic Year 2021/2022 was held offline and broadcast live through the official ITS TV Youtube channel. Located at the Swiss-Bellinn Manyar Hotel Surabaya, the inauguration was attended by the leadership of ITS, representatives of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) East Java Region, as well as guests from partner universities.
Opening his remarks, ITS Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ir Mochamad Ashari MEng IPU AEng expressed his appreciation to the graduates of ITS PSPPI for their hard work in undergoing a six-month education period to successfully hold the title of engineer. This ITS Electrical Engineering professor said that the inauguration of the engineer profession this time was the first time it was held offline by ITS during the pandemic.
The Chancellor, who is usually called Ashari, said that the implementation of the Professional Engineer Program (PPI) is a mandate from Law No. 11 of 2014 concerning Engineering, and strengthened in PP. 25 of 2019. Engineer certification is an obligation for professionals working in their fields. “In ITS itself, the implementation can be through the Past Learning Recognition Program (RPL),” he explained.
Also, present on this occasion was the Chairperson of PII for the East Java Region, Prof. Dr. Ir Mohammad Bisri, MS IPU. He conveyed appreciation and congratulations on the achievements of the 93 newly appointed engineers. Appreciation was also conveyed for the success of ITS in successfully organizing PPI under the auspices of the ITS Interdisciplinary School of Management and Technology (SIMT).
Furthermore, the man with the nickname Bisri revealed that currently, the proportion of engineers produced by universities is still far from the need for this profession. Bisri said that 40 universities were given the mandate to implement the PPI. However, of this number, only 34 universities are active in its implementation. “Because of the imbalance in needs, the government has not required every project to be engineered,” he explained.
Therefore, Bisri said that PII continued to boost universities to produce more engineers in the following years. Regarding this, Bisri believes that in the future ITS can contribute more to the distribution of engineers in Indonesia. “At the same time, we continue to carry out socialization and increase the number of universities that hold PPI,” he said.
In the end, Bisri hopes that the newly inaugurated engineers will immediately arrange for Membership Cards (KTA) and Engineer Registration Certificates (STRI). The goal is that these new engineers are formally legal to practice as engineers. “Hopefully, with more members, PII can be more advanced both professionally and organizationally,” he concluded.
