ITS Campus, ITS News – Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) students initiated a solution to optimize fresh graduates when they want to enter the world of professional work according to their wishes, interests, and talents. This solution is accompanied by student empowerment through an application called SKALASI.
Team leader Farhan Aly Hasbi said this application was motivated by potential problems and fresh graduate work experience. In their second and third years, many students already have a career plan after graduating from the undergraduate level. But on the other hand, many students are not ready to enter the world of work and are still confused about where to start.
Not only that, these problems are added when there are prospects for work; fresh graduates compete with graduates in their fields of knowledge and compete with graduates from various fields of science because today’s job competition requires workers to master more than one discipline. “In addition, students have some experience in the professional world of work,” said Farhan.
This student from the ITS Physics Department explained that from the results of the analysis of various existing problems, a SCALASI application was designed to help many young people overcome the issues mentioned earlier. Namely, finding a job following the majors and fields of knowledge studied or the desired position.
Furthermore, in addition to helping to overcome the current crisis of students, SKALASI can also help new graduates find jobs with clear paths, develop mature self-concepts, and increase mastery of career-supporting knowledge. This will be packaged in the form of a progressive web application and can be easily accessed by users using smartphones.
To achieve this target, Farhan and his team proposed several solutions. The first solution is a learning path to complete the dream job, wherein this feature makes it easy for users to choose how to learn. “Later on, students will learn directly through video courses to become prospective professional workers in the targeted field,” he explained.
The second solution is Curriculum Vitae (CV) Validator; this feature is used for consultation and recommending the best CV profile for applying for jobs. Then the third solution is a job comparison that allows users to compare information about two job positions and aims to facilitate the selection of jobs that match their interests.
The fourth solution provided is that the blog and article spaces are presented as additional features that contain other tips and tricks that users can read. The final solution is a job search portal. “This feature allows users to get information about available job vacancies in the labor market,” he said.
This batch of 2020 students shared the solutions presented through the SKALASI application, which was formed as a problem solver for fresh graduate students and also as a form of contribution to the sustainability of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 4 related to quality education, and number 8, namely decent work and economic growth. “What has been analyzed together with the Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat (SWOT) charts to the design of the thought process,” explained Farhan again.
In testing the SCALASI application on several potential users closest to this team, it was found that the User Interface (UI) that was formed resulted in a good user experience. In addition, Farhan revealed that potential users considered this application very suitable for the existing problems. With these results, SCALASI will focus on courses with complex material that can be referred to the Coursera or Udemy e-learning systems.
The ideas compiled during this lecture’s learning process were outlined in a paper entitled SKALASI: One-Stop Preparation to Enter Professional Careers in the World of Work for Students Based on Mobile Apps. This paper was also produced by Farhan and four members of his team, namely Andry Prasetyo, Hayfa Annisa, Ilma Rafi Muflihatu Yumna, and Made Rianja Richo Dainino.
Not in vain, with the guidance of lecturer Dr. Arief Bustomi SSi MSi, the team’s paper has won a gold medal as well as a special award from the Malaysia Innovation, Invention, and Creativity Association (MIICA) in the 2022 International Youth Business Competition (IYBC) organized by Indonesian Young Scientist Association (IYSA), early April.
