ITS Campus, ITS News – Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) students never stop making honorable achievements in the global arena. This time, two energy-efficient car teams from ITS, namely Antasena and Sapuangin, won first and third place in the 2022 Autonomous Programming Competition , which is a competition branch or sub-competition of the Shell Eco-Marathon (SEM) Virtual Program 2022 .

The online competition encourages participants to develop path-planning, perception, and control system algorithms in a virtual self-controlled vehicle using the Robot Operating System (ROS). The winner of this competition was announced online last Monday (16/5).

Mikael Sri Kurnia Raditya Dwiatmaka, Manager of the Science, Technology, Research, and Development Division of the Antasena Team, explained that his team developed the path with the best efficiency using an algorithm. In the next category, the ITS hydrology research team was required to achieve the 15 targets that the competition had set as efficiently as possible. “There are four efficiency assessment parameters: energy consumption, mileage, CPU usage, and travel time,” explained the 21-year-old student.

Successfully bringing the names of Indonesia and ITS to the top of the event, the Antasena ITS team designed an algorithm code which was then run through an autonomous vehicle simulator in the form of open software called CARLA. The programming language used by the Antasena ITS team is the C++ and Python programming language based on the Ubuntu Linux 18.04 operating system.

In designing the control algorithm, the Tangerang-born student explained that this year’s competition is getting more challenging because several additional rules are given to bring the simulated environment closer to the real world. “Cars are not allowed to cross the speed limit that has been determined and must not violate traffic signs. In addition, the simulation car must be able to avoid accidents or collisions with other cars that are randomly generated,” said Mikael.

After winning the first position this time, the Antasena team hopes to be able to make improvements from the existing evaluations to retain the championship title next year. “Hopefully, the successors in the ITS Antasena team can maintain the results that have been achieved so that they can continue to boast of the names of ITS and Indonesia,” said Mikael hopefully.

Another team that is no less proud, the ITS Sapuangin Team, which also competed, won the third position. According to the Head of the Electrical Division of the Sapuangin Team, Bima Dardaa Al Fathrah, his team has improved the programming skills of Sapuangin members. Not only that, the deepening algorithm used has been adjusted and optimized to achieve the best results.

Bima added that in this competition, the ITS Sapuangin team also considers other factors as their innovation, such as energy consumption and playing strategies. They also develop through reasonably complex analysis and calculations. “Unfortunately, we faced problems because the simulation results on the competition server were deemed inconsistent in providing output, where there were differences when run locally,” said Bima.

Nevertheless, the Sapuangin team still hopes that this winning tradition can be continued from year to year and continues to develop into a more modern digital era. “With this competition, we can see that the development of self-controlled vehicles continues to be prepared for the future, so support from various parties is needed so that the Sapuangin team can continue to make ITS proud,” he hoped.
