The ITS Macario Team won third place in the GAMA BCC 2022 with their ideas related to Net Zero Emission.

ITS Campus, ITS News – Indonesia is now committed to reducing the number of carbon emissions by setting a target in 2060 or sooner. Supporting this, three students of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) took a role by designing a strategy related to Net Zero Emission (Zero Carbon Emissions) through the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) approach.

They are Annisa Ramadhani and Reyhan Hamdan Ibda’u Atma from the Department of System and Industrial Engineering class 2019 and Anisa Luthfiah Amalia from the Department of Business Management batch 2019, members of the Macario Team. As a team representative, Annisa explained that the main focus of this innovation is to reduce carbon emissions by 38 percent by 2040.

This idea, continued Annisa, was once proposed by the Macario Team for the 2022 Gadjah Mada Business Case Competition (GAMA BCC), held by the Alumni Family of the Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta (KAFEGAMA), some time ago. This competition cooperates with PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (PKT) as the organizing partner. “Therefore, the target of our idea is PT PKT,” she said.

Annisa added that five things became the forerunner of this idea. The first is fertilizer production, which is suspected to be the most significant contributor to ammonia gas. “The second reason is the presence of a new government regulation related to the carbon gas emission tax, which requires economic actors to switch to green economic activities,” said the hijab-wearing student.

In addition, she continued, the rising product prices and the rapid pace of competitor technology were also considered other reasons. “In addition, now there has been a market shift in the agribusiness world with the presence of sustainable products or environmentally friendly products,” explained the girl born in Lumajang on December 10, 2001.

According to Annisa, the Macario Team prepared this idea using the Threats, Opportunities, Weaknesses, Strengths (TOWS) analysis methods, the micro method, the macro method, and the QSPM method. The TOWS method, said Annisa, is used to obtain strategic policies by considering PT PKT’s internal and external factors.

Furthermore, said Annisa, the micro method is carried out by understanding the competition in an industry, identifying the business position, and positioning the company to be superior to competitors. “Meanwhile, macro analysis is carried out by identifying external factors that affect a company,” Annisa explained further.

Finally, Annisa explained, the QSPM method is used to determine the priority of alternative strategies obtained from the analysis of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT). The result of the study of this method is that PT PKT can implement developing new business & technologies into the right strategy while waiting for Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) to be successfully established in 2040.

Thanks to this new thought, Team Macario has successfully won third place at the 2022 BCC GAMA event. In the competition, the Deputy for Finance and Risk Management of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Nawal Nely, the jury, gave a positive response to the idea. She also provided input to the Macario Team to re-discover business model information and pay attention to financial feasibility.

In preparing this idea, Annisa admitted that her team was actively conducting guidance asynchronously and synchronously with her supervisor, Niniet Indah Arvitrida ST MT Ph.D. “Besides, we are also trying to find references from journals and actively observe other similar competitions,” she said.

In the future, this student with a hobby of writing hopes that her team can participate in other competitions related to business cases. “Because of that, we feel encouraged to think critically and understand the problems in the industrial world,” she concluded. (ITS Public Relation/far)
