ITS Campus, ITS News –The rapid development of the economy and industry in Indonesia shows that an approach is needed to encourage the growth of the creative economy, especially product design. Seeing the urgency, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), together with the Alliance of Indonesian Industrial Product Designers (ADPII), held the National Convention for Product Design (Despro) Study Program, which was held for the next two days, starting on Friday (19/8).

The convention held in the Senate Meeting Room of the ITS Rectorate Building aims to unify the complexities faced by the creative industry in the product design field, which is strongly influenced by the different contexts of each educational institution. This is an essential issue for creative industry players to discuss, especially in the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program.

Chairman of the ADPII Study Program Forum Achmad Syarief SSn MSc Ph.D. explained that since the Covid-19 pandemic, there had been many demands for adaptation and the existence of product designs in Indonesia. The contribution of product design in Indonesia is required to be more adaptive and synergistic with the post-pandemic situation in Indonesia. “The priority is in the form of a scientific vision that is targeted to become the main concept in achieving product design targets,” he explained.

Furthermore, he said, this scientific vision was carried out by mapping the educational vision of each study program in each institution and taking into account the concept of education implementation, innovation output targets, learning benefits, and learning process orientation. The four domains of the study of industrial product design are not absolute but will be carried out optional based on the tendencies of each institution.

The lecturer at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) also revealed that this product design convention was born with a dynamic scientific breath and is open to various challenges. In the pandemic era, when all aspects of life must be able to adapt quickly, product design, closely related to problem-solving people’s lives creatively, deserves to take an important role.

Together with the MBKM program, the scope of product design is also getting more expansive and makes it easier for students to develop and compete healthily in various fields of product design on a creative economy scale. Usually includes transportation design, furniture design, jewelry design, apparel design, medical device design, trends and lifestyles, digital modeling technology, and casting technology.

Not only that, but product design can also develop in the realm of UI/UX and branding strategies that need to be accommodative to become a platform that has implications for the general public. “Not only created from scratch, but it is necessary to pay attention to the creation of products that are functional, have value, or opportunities for a better quality of life for the community,” said the man familiarly called Syarief.

Syarief also explained the output of this convention related to the target behind the emergence of innovation as a result of education. Hopefully, this educational outcome can encourage product-oriented innovation or focus more on the consumer segment. Moreover, this product design will also promote process-oriented education or one that focuses more on product positioning.

The results of this convention will later be inaugurated at the next national way at Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta and released to the international community in October. Ending the activity, Syarief hopes that the results of the formulation of the scientific vision of the Despro Study Program can help and make it easier for various educational institutions in Indonesia to continue to work together to achieve the 2030 economic development target.
