ITS Campus News – The energy-efficient car teams, Antasena and Sapuangin, from Institut Teknologi Sepeuluh Nopember (ITS) again made a proud achievement at the international level. This time, each team won third place in the Urban Concept Internal Combustion Engine and Prototype Hydrogen Fuel Cell categories at the Shell Eco-Marathon (SEM) 2022 Asia Pacific and Middle East which was announced after the final, Saturday (15/10).
The annual competition, which requires contestants to create energy-efficient cars, is divided into two programs, including On-Track Program and Virtual Program. After being suspended for two years due to the pandemic, this year the On-Track Program is again being held offline in Indonesia, to be precise at the Mandalika International Circuit, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
The On-Track Programme event is divided into two vehicle categories, namely Prototype and Urban Concept and three energy categories namely Internal Combustion, Battery- Electric, and Hydrogen Fuel Cell. This prestigious competition held by the oil and gas company Shell was attended by more than 11 countries in the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions such as India, Kazakhstan, Korea, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and others.
The General Manager of ITS Antasena Team, Geraldy Rafi, said that in the competition of Shell Eco-Marathon, 2022 the Antasena Alpha team fell down from the Prototype Concept vehicle class category to the Hydrogen Fuel Cell energy category. In this category, participants are challenged to design a car with strong but lightweight materials, high fuel cell and electric motor efficiency, low friction transmission system, and integrated sensor to communicate the condition of the car to the driver.
To answer this challenge, according to the student who is often called Gery, Antasena Alpha is designed with a more aerodynamic body design made from carbon fiber composite which has rigid and lightweight properties. This is the main key of an energy efficient car. “In addition, Antasena Alpha also uses a chassis type ladder frame made of light and strong aluminum to support a load of around 150 kilograms,” explained Gerry.
This Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Department student continued, development was also carried out on the transmission system by increasing the efficiency of the transmission system on the drive parts that using DC motors. In addition, important factors that also affect energy-efficient cars are wheels and tires. The Antasena Alpha car uses alloy wheels with carbon fiber composite materials and lightweight flat tires.

Another team that is no less proud is the ITS Sapuangin Team with the Sapuangin XI Evo 3 car which also competed in SEM 2022. This team was successful won third place in the Urban Concept category and the Internal Combustion energy category. The challenge given to this category is to race three laps with a total distance of 12.7 kilometers and a time limit of 30 minutes. The Sapuangin team was able to overcome this challenge with a fuel efficiency of 270 kilometers per liter.
The General Manager of ITS Sapuangin Team, William Mikhael Parlindungan, revealed that his team has participated in this prestigious world event since 2010 in a row. Even since 2010, the Sapuangin Team has never been absent from defending the championship titles and awards from various categories that have been held. “This year will be the 12th year that the Sapuangin Team has participated in the SEM event,” he explained.
William admitted that other university teams from Indonesia had a high competitive spirit, which made them the toughest opponents for the Sapuangin team in the SEM 2022 event. However, with effort and hard work, the Sapuangin Team was able to bring home an award. “Hopefully, we will return with the best innovations to support better results in the future,” said the student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, optimistically.
This award was not the only one won by the Antasena and Sapuangin ITS Team at SEM 2022. In the category of Virtual Program competition, the Antasena and Sapuangin teams won first place respectively for the Communication Award and first place for the Data and Telemetry Award. Not only that, in the global level Autonomous Programming Competition competition category, the Antasena Team won first place and the Sapuangin Team took home third place. (ITS PR)
