ITS Campus News – is increasingly strengthening its contribution to environmental sustainability. With all its initiatives to encourage environmental sustainability, ITS again won the title of Four (4) Trees or the highest score for two consecutive years in the Trees Rating organized by UI GreenMetric and officially announced on the last Wednesday (26/10).
UI GreenMetric is a program initiated by Universitas Indonesia and aims to encourage environmental sustainability in higher education based on commitments and initiatives from the university. The Head of Smart Eco Campus Development Unit, Dr. Ir. Susi Agustina Wilujeng, S.T., M.T., said that there were six assessment criteria to achieve this perfect predicate. Consists of regulation and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, as well as education and research.
Susi explained that regulatory and infrastructure criteria measure the amount of space provided for greening and environmental preservation, as well as the budget allocated for sustainable development on campus. Meanwhile, the energy and climate change criteria measure institutional efforts to increase the use of energy-efficient equipment and develop renewable energy. There are also waste criteria that assess the existence of waste management programs, such as recycling programs, toxic, organic and inorganic waste processing.
Furthermore, the water criterion measures institutional efforts to reduce groundwater use, enhance conservation programs, and protect habitats. While the transportation criteria measure the existence of a transportation policy to limit the number of private vehicles. Finally, the education and research criteria that assess courses, research, publications, websites and reports produced or organized by institutions related to greening and sustainability.
This Environmental Engineering Department lecturer said that ITS had contributed a lot in the six criteria. In regulatory and infrastructure criteria, ITS has created an Occupational Health and Environmental Safety (K3L) unit and its service called Halo K3L and is electronically based. “For health infrastructure, we have had a Medical Center for a long time and the services will continue to be improved,” she continued.
In terms of transportation criteria, ITS already has an autonomous i-Car car or an environmentally friendly smart car whose services are still operating today for everyone in the ITS area. A portal system is also implemented at all ITS entrances to reduce the number of private vehicles that enter the ITS area but are not interested. “This also reduces emissions in the campus environment,” she said.
Susi expects that this title will increase ITS enthusiasm to create a sustainable campus image. “It is hoped that the involvement of all parties, starting from the field of infrastructure, the education and student affairs sector, to the budgeting financial sector,” she concluded. (ITS PR)
