Campus ITS, ITS News – Lecturer in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Data Analytics (FSAD) Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Dr. rer nat Arif Luqman SSi MT won a Research Fellowship scholarship to Germany given by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Through this Humboldt Research Fellowship scholarship, Arif had the opportunity to do research for 24 months at a well-known university in Germany, Julius-Maximilian University of Würzburg.

Carrying out the topic of research in the field of microorganisms, Arief will examine more deeply the natural microflora in human skin, which produce neurochemical compounds to reduce the symptoms of atopic dermatitis. “A research idea that has never existed before is one of the selection criteria for this scholarship,” said the recipient of the Indonesian Education Scholarship (BPI) doctoral program from the Education Fund Management Institute (LPDP).

Not only that, the track record of research and publication of scientific papers reviewed through the H Index Scopus is also considered. It is known that Arief’s previous study was able to find neurotransmitter-producing staphylococcus bacteria in the intestine that play a role in the colonization of bacteria in the intestine and on the skin, which can accelerate the healing of open wounds. “The discovery of a gene capable of degrading plastic in the human intestine is also one of my previous research,” said the man from Mojokerto.

Arief continued, when registering for this scholarship, participants must also have university references that are certain to accept researchers doing research there.

The Head of the ITS Microbiology and Biotechnology Laboratory also explained that university selection must have a strong foundation. “Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg where my research will be famous for studies on bacterial and host interactions which will support my research topic,” said this ITS Biology bachelor’s degree alumnus.

Finally, this doctoral alumnus from Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen is very grateful to be selected as one of the recipients of this international award, given the intense competition in the selection process. “I will use this opportunity to expand relations and share the valuable knowledge I have gained with academics in Indonesia,” he confirmed.
