ITS Campus, ITS News – The Nawasena Team of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) succeeded in making the name of alma mater and Indonesia proud again at the international stage. At that moment, the team from ITS Marine Engineering Department won the third place at the International Student Design Competition 2023 held by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA).
The achievement was announced offline in New York, United States (US) on Friday (28/4). The General Manager of ITS Nawasena Team , Nur Wahyu Fadholi, revealed that his team had started designing the ships that were performed in that competition in the last October. “The process of designing the ship named MV Maganda itself was carried out by ten team members who all came from the ITS Marine Engineering Department,” he explained.
Ipung explained that the evaluation of the competition, conducted in the last February after the design results were submitted to the committee, focused on designing an electric-powered ferry which was projected to be able to safely cross the Pasig River in Manila, Philippines. Therefore, ITS Nawasena Team designed MV Maganda as a ship that is fully powered by electricity. The ship itself is equipped with 15 sets of batteries, each of them has a power of 8.6 kilowatts per hour.
Ipung continued that it was the first time that ITS Nawasena Team designed an electric-powered ship. The ships previously designed by Nawasena ITS were still powered by diesel or hybrid (a mixture of fossil fuels and electricity). The student of the ITS Marine Engineering Department also admitted that designing this part of the electrical energy supply was the most difficult challenge in the competition.
Despite experiencing difficulties in the energy supply section, Ipung revealed that he and other ITS Nawasena team members learned a lot about electrical energy in this competition. “Here we learn many things related to battery safety, such as good battery placement and how to prevent battery damage,” he explained.
At the end of the online interview from the US, the class of 2019 student said that he hoped that ITS Nawasena Team could take part in more international competitions in the future. “I also expect that my friends in ITS Nawasena Team can apply the knowledge that has been obtained in this team when they are in the field of work later,” he said hopefully.
In this online competition, ITS Nawasena Team faced many great teams from various countries and universities. In addition, the participants who took part in this competition were not only undergraduate students but there were also participants from students in pursuing master’s education. The teams that became the 1st and 2nd place in this competition are from the University of Bremen and Rostock University, Germany. (ITS Public Relation)
