ITS Campus, ITS News – The increasingly competitive development of the computing industry is shown by the growing implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technology in everyday life. In response to this, the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) through the Artificial Intelligence Engineering Study Program (RKA) developed an AI-system Hijaiyah Letter Learning application with gadgets.
Lecturer at the ITS Informatics Engineering Department, Dr. Eng Nanik Suciati SKom MKom, revealed that the development of this application stems from the results of the Final Assignment (TA) of his student, namely Irman Kurniawan. The results of the TA entitled Hijaiyah Letter Learning Application using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) Based Handwriting Recognition became further research and development in the RKA Study Program. “This TA was chosen because it fits the work of the RKA Study Program,” said Nanik.
The Head of ITS Smart Computing and Vision Laboratory continued, this application is suitable for use by all ages. This is supported by a simple and easy-to-understand learning method so that children can easily recognize Arabic letters before reciting. “The application is also fairly complete with 30 hijaiyah letters that users can learn,” he explained.
In this application, users can play two learning modules. The first module is an exercise where users are taught how to write hijaiyah letters according to the order of strokes in writing each hijaiyah letter. Then the second is an evaluation module which will give users two minutes to complete as many writing questions as possible. “In the evaluation module, an AI system is used in the system which will determine whether the results of the user’s handwriting are correct or not,” said the woman from Pasuruan.
Regarding the system used, Nanik said that this application uses the Unity game engine for its development. The game engine also helps the development team to set up a user-friendly User Interface (UI). The use of the TensorFlow Library for CNN development in the application’s AI system.

Finally, Nanik revealed that the application for the 2022 ITS graduate TA results cannot be accessed on the Play Store. But Nanik plans to upload this application to the ITS repository so that it can be easily used and studied. Nanik emphasized that AI is not a negative thing, AI aims to facilitate human daily work. “This application will help ordinary people to start learning their Koran,” said Nanik. (ITS Public Relation)
