Tourism expert from Australia’s Griffith University, Prof Noel Scott, shares strategies to maximise the storytelling approach in attracting tourists.

ITS Campus, ITS News – The natural beauty of Lombok Island is an undeniable attraction. Improving its tourism sector, the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) team invited the community to promote the beauty of their area through a storytelling approach.

The head of the KKN team, I Gusti Agung Jaya Hiswara, and his two teammates found that tourist destinations in Lombok tend to rely on their natural beauty. In fact, professor at Griffith University Australia, Noel Scott said that tourists will have more interest in attractions that have storytelling.

According to Scott, tourists will be more enthusiastic about attractions that involve them in every activity, not just as spectators. He continued, several countries have implemented a storytelling-based tourist attraction approach. ‘By processing storytelling-based tourism with the right narrative, it can maximise the tourist experience,’ he said.

Agreeing with Scott, Dr Made Suyasa MHum, described if the cultural elements in Lombok have the potential to develop further. ‘These elements include belief systems, community organisations, knowledge, language, arts, livelihoods, tools, and technology,’ he said in a workshop by the KKN ITS team.

Agung said that the 58 workshop participants from Sesaot, Selong Belanak, Meninting, Gegutu Reban, Sekarbela and Pringgasela villages immediately practised the material by drafting a story script. The script development consisted of making a script and storyboard. At the end of the event, participants were asked to present the scripts they had compiled. ‘The results of their presentations were evaluated directly by Scott and several other tourism experts,’ she explained.
