ITS Campus, ITS News — Insitut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) continues to demonstrate its expertise in pioneering unmanned aircraft innovation. In the prestigious National Flying Robot Competition (Kontes Robot Terbang Indonesia – KRTI) 2023 organized by the Sumatera Institute of Technology (ITERA), Bayucaraka ITS team secured seven championship titles at Pangeran M. Bun Yamin Airfield in Lampung.
In this competition, held at Pangeran M. Bun Yamin Airfield, Lampung, Bayucaraka impressed with outstanding achievements in six out of nine competition categories. These achievements include Best Lap nomination and a hopeful victory in the Racing Plane division, a second-place finish in the Fixed Wing division, and four awards in the Technology Development division.
Thoriq Akbar Maulana, General Manager of Bayucaraka ITS, explained that ITS competed against 50 teams in the Racing Plane division. Leveraging their top-performing aircraft, Uldoro, ITS achieved a remarkable lap time of 32 seconds. “We are extremely proud because ITS’s aircraft has proven to be the fastest,” he exclaimed.
In the Fixed Wing division, which tests long-distance autonomous flight and indoor flight capabilities, the Bayucaraka ITS team relied on their BRB 29 aircraft. Thoriq, who is affectionately known as Thoriq, revealed that there was an incident involving the aircraft’s engine that caused it to crash. “However, we are grateful that we ultimately secured second place for the first time in this division,” he said.
Not to be outdone, the team competing in the Technology Development division also achieved success in four development themes. In the Airframe Innovation theme, which emphasizes innovations in the aircraft’s structure, accompanying technology, and materials, ITS secured third place. Their standout innovation in this category was the aircraft’s ability to take off vertically.
Furthermore, in the Propulsion System Development theme, which focuses on propulsion technology, ITS claimed first place in the Electronic Speed Controller subtheme and third place in the Prime Mover subtheme. These subthemes respectively concentrate on real-time protection innovations and aircraft propulsion systems.
Finally, Bayucaraka ITS, with its expertise in unmanned aerial vehicles, also earned third place in the Ground Control Station subtheme. In this subtheme, the team excelled in the development of monitoring stations, antennas, and antenna trackers, which are essential for unmanned aerial vehicle operations.
With these seven awards, ITS solidified its position as one of the top three teams out of a total of 104 participating teams in KRTI 2023. Thoriq expressed his pride and gratitude for this achievement, especially given that this year’s KRTI was the first in-person event after the pandemic.
In addition, the students from the ITS Department of Maritime Transportation hope that the Bayucaraka ITS team will continue to maintain its enthusiasm for advancing in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). “In the future, we hope that the Bayucaraka ITS team will continue to achieve new milestones and secure the overall championship in future KRTI events,” he optimistically concluded.
