ITS Campus, ITS News — The use of inorganic-based products, especially in the household sphere, has proven to have the potential to produce waste that pollutes the environment. Departing from this, a team of students from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) presented Chozz, a detergent innovation made from coconut oil and ecoenzymes.
Chozz ITS team leader Rafindita Sumar Ramadan revealed that this innovation was born because of the use of inorganic detergents in households that are considered environmentally unfriendly. “The use of this inorganics detergent can pose serious problems for the survival of the living environment,” he said.
Based on research conducted by the Chozz team, according to the Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) it has been recorded that in 2014 to 2018 the damage to water resources in Indonesia has increased to 50 percent.
The figure also shows that the household scale also contributes to pollution of water resources. One source of pollution that comes from households is the use of inorganic detergents. “Chozz is an innovation that can replace the role of inorganic detergents,” explained the ITS Information Systems Department student.
The innovation created by the Chozz team has organic ingredients that are considered more environmentally friendly. Utilizing easy-to-find resources, the Chozz team made the detergent with coconut oil and ecoenzymes. “The use of organic ingredients is expected to prevent and reduce water pollution caused by households,” Rafin added.
Rafin explained the reason behind choosing coconut oil as the raw material was due to the abundant coconut resources in Indonesia. Meanwhile, ecoenzyme, which is a fermentation product of organic waste, was chosen because it has proven cleaning ability. “We also use some additional organic ingredients as deodorizers,” he added.
Chozz’s team made the detergent in a solid form with a customized seal, in which one solid detergen can be used to clean five kilos of clothes. It’s also an innovation that Chozz introduced in addition to the organic raw material innovation. “We made the Chozz in solid form to make it more efficient,” said the 2023 force student.
Furthermore, Rafin explained that even though it is made from organic ingredients, Chozz detergent still has the cleaning ability that is not inferior to inorganic detergents. This is proven after the prototyping and testing phase, Chozz detergent has good solubility and cleaning ability.
The Chozz team’s innovation has also won second place in the 2024 International Youthpreneur Competition (IYC) organized by Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), recently. In addition to bringing interesting product innovations, the Chozz ITS team also designed a business plan that will run from marketing strategies to financial planning.
Finally, Rafin and his team members also expressed their joy and pride for winning the championship in their first year of college. The Chozz ITS team hopes that the organic detergent innovation it developed can make people aware of the dangers of using inorganic materials for the surrounding environment. “Our biggest hope is that this product can improve the quality of the environment in the future,” said Rafin hopefully.
