ITS Campus, ITS News — Increasingly showing its excellence, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has again proven the quality of its innovation through the Spektronics Team, a chemical reaction-based prototype car team. Innovating the Spektronics 27 (SP27) car, one of the proud ITS teams successfully won the Most Consistent Car category and 1st Runner Upat the Eco-Idea Innovation Creativity for Better Days (ECODAYS) competition held at Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta, Saturday (12/10).
The various stages of the competition held by the UNS Chemical Engineering have been successfully passed by the ITS Spektronics Team. Becoming the first winner in the Most Consistent Car category and 1st Runner Up, the car made by the ITS student team presented various unique features in its car. Categories such as safety, race, realization, and presentation have been successfully fulfilled by this superior ITS team.
ITS Spektronics Team Manager Guinevere Louisa Santoso explained that the SP27 car applies a special mechanism in moving its car. The innovative mechanism is a 3:2 gear ratio and 5/2 roller valve, where both together increase efficiency and responsiveness in achieving optimal distance. “This car has proven its performance, through experiments that have been carried out so far,” said Guinevere.
The innovations applied to the SP27 car allow the vehicle to reach the desired distance. With these innovations, the ITS Spektronics team has succeeded in running the car as far as 10.9 meters and 11.14 meters from the target of 11 meters set by the committee. This mechanism is also designed to improve the performance of the car, so that it can be more efficient and exceed the target distance previously set by the team of 7 – 14 meters.
The success of the ITS Spektronics team lies not only in the technical innovation and efficiency of the car, but also in the extraordinary level of safety. The SP27 car successfully met strict safety criteria, strengthening the team’s position in the car innovation competition. “With guaranteed safety, this car is able to compete competitively while providing a sense of security, adding value to the innovation offered,” said the young man from Surabaya
The working mechanism of the SP27 car is based on the pressure generated from a chemical reaction. This reaction takes place in a special room in the car, where the chemicals Hydrogen Peroxide and Iron (III) Chloride which produce water and oxygen gas create pressure. This pressure provides the power needed to move the wheels, so that this chemical reaction continues as long as the car operates very efficiently.
In addition to the superior power proven in race tests, the car, which was developed over six months, also emphasizes environmentally friendly aspects. The design of the SP27 car is accompanied by minimizing environmental impact by reducing emissions. “This innovation shows the team’s commitment to sustainability, making this car not only superior in speed,” said the student of the Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering.
With the victory in this competition, Guinevere hopes to take many valuable lessons from the experience. Going forward, the ITS Spektronics team will continue to be committed to perfecting innovations in the Chem-E-Car field, improving efficiency to environmentally friendly aspects. “With that, our work can increasingly compete at the national and international levels,” he concluded optimistically.
