Kampus ITS, ITS News —The Spektronics Team from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has again successfully won 1st place at the VDI 19th ChemCar Competition 2024 organized by kjVI Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) Germany which was held in Frankfurt, Germany, Monday (11/11) local time. Amazingly, this is the fourth time for this proud ITS student team to top the podium at the same event.
The VDI ChemCar Competition itself is a prototype car racing competition that uses chemical reactions as fuel or commonly known as Chemical Engineering Car (Chem-E-Car). Spektronics ITS Team Manager Alifia Salsa Nabila Putri said that in competing in this event, her team has prepared various innovations on its flagship Spektronics 26 x PP car.
Furthermore, Alifia said that one of these innovations lies in the electrical system of the car. The team guided by the lecturer of the ITS Chemical Engineering Department, Dr. Rendra Panca Anugraha ST, succeeded in increasing the consistency and precision of the car’s energy conversion process. “Through this improvement, our car can achieve more stable and efficient performance, even in dynamic competition conditions,” said Alifia.
In addition, the first Chem-E-Car team in Indonesia also provided improvisation on the air-aluminum battery which can make the car lighter. This can be achieved through the development of a cathode with a smaller volume, but still has greater power and efficiency. “As a result, not only does it reduce the weight of the car, the innovation in the air-aluminum battery also allows the battery to operate longer without sacrificing output power,” explained Alifia.
This ITS Chemical Engineering Department student said that this competition consists of five stages. The first stage is concept vorlage, which is the stage of compiling the car concept starting from the design, chemical reactions used, and car construction design. Furthermore, the second stage is safety document, which is filling in all safety aspects of all components and chemical reactions used and continued with document revision in the third stage.
In the fourth stage, the ITS Spektronics Team conducted a presentation and safety inspection, which is an assessment of the prototype car in terms of innovation, technology, and safety. Finally, the fifth stage is the race competition. At this stage, each car will be assessed for its level of accuracy by running the car through chemical reaction power to reach a certain distance that has been set. “The car with the closest distance to the finish line will get the most points,” explained Alifia.
After achieving this achievement, Alifia hopes that the ITS Spektronics Team can continue to strive to always develop its innovation as a catalyst for innovation. “Hopefully the ITS Spektronics Team can continue its steps in other international competitions and continue to expand the scope of the competition in the future,” hoped the girl from Serang.
