ITS Campus, ITS News — The many natural disasters that have occurred in several parts of the world including Indonesia, lately, require proper and adequate mitigation handling. In response to this condition, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) supports disaster mitigation by utilizing technology from various scientific fields.
This support is realized through the International Joint Symposium (IJS) 2024 which will be held for three days, starting Wednesday (4/12). The event, which took place in the Auditorium of the ITS Research Center Building, raised the theme Multi-Mitigation of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering to Natural Disaster on Problematic Soils.
ITS Chancellor Prof. Ir. Bambang Pramujati ST MScEng PhD said that the theme of natural disaster mitigation raised at JIS 2024 is a topic that is very relevant to current conditions. “The goal is to discuss how to reduce the frequency of infrastructure being impacted by natural disasters on vulnerable land,” he said.

Not alone, Bambang said that ITS also collaborated with several other parties in organizing this international symposium. Among others are Kumamoto University, Japanese Geotechnical Society (JGS) Kyusu Branch, and the Association of Indonesian Soil Engineers (HATTI) East Java Branch.
In addition, this event also received support from various industries. Among them are those from Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, and the United Nations (UN). “I believe that our presence here marks a moment of collaboration and commitment to advance research, education, and cross-cultural understanding,” said the ITS Mechanical Engineering professor.

Meanwhile, Head of JGS Kyushu Branch Prof. Kenichi Sato explained that natural disaster mitigation technology in the field of geotechnics is currently in great demand. He continued that the event, which invited speakers from various countries, would also showcase the research results of postgraduate students and young researchers. Some of them were presented for the first time in an international symposium like this. Therefore, the lecturer from Fukuoka University invited the symposium participants to actively participate in discussions and be able to utilize them in future research. “I hope that this symposium can run successfully and productively for the next three days,” he said.

On the first day of IJS 2024, there was a keynote session that invited professors from various foreign universities as well as from ITS itself as speakers. Among them were Prof. Andrew J. Whittle from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Prof. Kazunari Sako from Kagoshima University, and Prof. Ria Asih Aryani Soemitro from ITS. In addition, there was also one poster session, two invited sessions, and one general session that filled the series of events today. (ITS PUBLIC RELATIONS)
