The production process uses a sorting table that increases Wonosalam coffee productivity
Jombang, ITS News — Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) continues to expand its collaboration in various sectors, one of which is through the ITS Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (DTSI) which conducted an operations management visit at Koperasi Kopi Wonosalam, Jombang, Friday (6/12). This visit was part of the ITS collaboration with PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMI).
The head of the activity, Dr Ir Mokhamad Suef MSc Eng, said that this activity is part of the Toyota Production System (TPS) program, which focuses on non-manufacturing development. This program continues the previous cooperation of the manufacturing laboratory program with ITS. “Because ITS has achieved significant improvements in the TPS program in the manufacturing industry line,” explained the man who is familiarly called Suef.

The DTSI ITS lecturer added that it used the opportunity to empower the potential of coffee Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Wonosalam. The activity, attended by 20 DTSI ITS students, not only channeled knowledge to MSMEs but also provided students with the experience to dive directly into operational management in a production process.
In this activity, the lecturers of the DTSI ITS Laboratory and TMMI reviewed the efforts made by ITS to increase production efficiency for Wonosalam coffee farmers. In the review activity carried out directly at the Wonosalam coffee operational site, DTSI ITS students also explained their success in increasing the productivity of work standardization in the coffee production process.

The Engineering and Quality Management lecturer revealed that ITS improved work standardization from sorting coffee beans to product marketing. One of them is transforming the manual sorting process into a more effective sorting table. “It can also reduce the risk of bone disease among coffee farmers, as they do not need to bend over when sorting,” said Suef.
In addition to the operational review, this activity was also complemented by tree planting as a symbol of cooperation between ITS, TMMI, and Kopi Wonosalam MSMEs. On this occasion, Vice President Director of PT TMMI Bob Azam expressed his hope that this collaboration can be continued as a downstream agribusiness so that it can help more MSMEs in the future. “Hopefully, this activity can provide sustainable benefits in building the independence of MSMEs,” said Bob.
