Encouraging Quality Research, ITS Inaugurates Six New Professors

ITS Campus, ITS News Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has reaffirmed its commitment to encourage quality research and academic innovation by inaugurating six new professors. This inauguration significantly strengthens ITS’s role as a higher education institution that continues to contribute to the advancement of science and technology. The inauguration for the third time at the beginning of this year took place at the ITS Research Center Auditorium, Thursday (2/20).

Opening the event, ITS Rector Prof Ir Bambang Pramujati ST MSc Eng PhD gave his appreciation to the new professors who made the total number of professors at ITS 221 people. He emphasized the importance of the role of professors as the backbone in advancing ITS and the nation through their work. “With the addition of professors at ITS, let us intensify research and the benefits of ITS,” he said.

Starting the scientific oration session, Prof. Dr. Ir. Murni Rachmawati MT, the 216th ITS professor, delivered her scientific oration titled Integrated Architectural Sustainability. This oration highlighted the importance of collaboration between technology and design in creating an environmentally friendly and functional environment. “Sustainability in architecture can be achieved through various elements that are mutually integrated,” explained the professor of the ITS Architecture Department.

Then, a lecturer from the Biology Department, Prof. Dr. Nurul Jadid SSi MSc, with the title Uncovering the Role of Plant Cell and Molecular Biology in Increasing Secondary Metabolite Synthesis. In his oration, he emphasized how a modern biotechnology approach can help increase the production of secondary metabolites that are of high value for health and industry. “The application of plant cell and molecular biology in various sectors can support the needs of sustainable industry and pharmacy,” explained the 217th ITS professor.

Continuing the oration session, the 218th ITS professor, Prof. Dr. Ir. Umi Laili Yuhana SKom MSc, gave her scientific oration titled Software Engineering as a Catalyst for Digital Innovation for Quality and Sustainable Education. She also highlighted the importance of developing software that is able to adapt to the needs of modern education in order to accommodate various learning models. “This is expected to be able to help teachers in preparing more effective and inclusive learning,” explained the professor from the Department of Informatics Engineering.

Next, Prof. Dr. Wiwik Anggraeni SSi MKom from the Department of Information Systems presented her scientific oration titled Exploring the Future with Big Data: The Role of Predictive Analytics in Strategic Decision Making. In her presentation, she explained how big data can produce more accurate decisions in the business world, government, and the health sector. “Predictive analytics plays an important role in strategic decision making in various sectors and aspects of life,” said the 219th ITS professor.

Next, Prof. Ir. Haryo Dwito Armono ST MEng PhD from the Department of Ocean Engineering delivered his scientific oration titled Artificial Reefs as Environmentally Friendly Coastal Protection Structures. He also discussed the ecological impacts of artificial reef construction and how these structures can be a sustainable solution for coastal protection. “These artificial reefs are able to withstand waves and coastal abrasion that impact water quality,” said the 220th ITS professor.

Ending the scientific oration session, Prof. Dr. Eng. Rony Seto Wibowo ST MT from the Department of Electrical Engineering delivered his scientific oration titled Monitoring the Energy Transition with Optimization. In his presentation, he explained how optimization strategies can accelerate the renewable energy transition and reduce dependence on fossil resources. “Optimizing this energy transition can increase flexibility and adjust to needs,” explained the professor.

Closing the inauguration procession, the Chairman of the ITS Professor Council, Prof. Dr. Ir. Imam Robandi MT, emphasized that becoming a professor is not the end, but rather the first step in making a greater contribution. He also emphasized that the role of academics in research and innovation will be a key factor in supporting the fourth point of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Quality Education.
