Prof Dr Ir Murni Rachmawati MT presenting her study related to Sustainable Architecture in her scientific oration for her inauguration as the 216th ITS Professor
ITS Campus, ITS News –The developing era has an impact on many aspects of life, including in the field of architecture which plays a role as one of the sciences that accommodates human creativity. Seeing this situation, Professor of the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Prof. Dr. Ir. Murni Rachmawati MT researched the role of humans as the center of life through the perspective of sustainable architecture.
Based on her study, Murni found that in the past 18 years there have been three main challenges that have always accompanied the development of architectural science. These challenges are in the aspects of nature, technology, and humanity. “In addition to these three aspects, every year the challenges that emerge are also increasingly numerous and diverse,” explained the 216th Professor of ITS.
Departing from the challenges faced by humans in the 21st century, the lecturer of the ITS Department of Architecture deepened her study to present architectural theory with good ideas and can predict the future. Through her study, Murni concluded that humans play a role as the center that controls and integrates aspects of life including architectural science.
The 216th ITS Professor, Prof. Dr. Ir. Murni Rachmawati MT, conducted a study titled Integrated Architectural Sustainability.
In more detail, in terms of nature, Murni explained that humans must be able to create and use buildings with as little damage as possible to nature and the humans who occupy them. “In addition, in designing buildings, humans must be able to elevate locality as an important part of architecture,” she reminded.
Meanwhile, in terms of technology, she continued, humans must be able to create and control technology as a development tool to present useful architecture. The Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Planning, and Geosciences (FTSPK) ITS for the 2020-2024 period emphasized that technology must also help architecture preserve nature and save planet earth.
In an effort to provide good values in architecture, human sensitivity also plays a role in the development process. The woman born in Rembang suggested that architecture can carry culture and history in forming identity. “The human aspect in architecture plays a role in forming the quality of sustainable human life,” she said.
By integrating these aspects with humans as the center of control, Murni is sure that the problems that arise in the development of architectural science can be resolved. In addition, the goal of sustainable architecture can also be achieved. “However, to achieve all this, humans that are able to protect and care for nature as fellow creations of God is needed,” explained the ITS Bachelor of Architecture alumna.
This woman, born in 1962, assessed that all crises that occur in the world are caused by humans being unable to relate the various impacts of progress with spiritual values. Therefore, education with a spiritual approach is the right step to create humans who have strong principles and integrity. Through a spiritual approach, humans will think twice about taking actions that can destroy nature.
Through her extensive studies, Murni has succeeded in contributing to presenting a better life through the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The main points supported are point 4 on quality education and point 9 on sustainable cities and communities.
Murni hopes that the theory produced from her studies can be useful not only for the development of architectural science but also all aspects of life. Especially for the world of education and the policy-making process in determining a better direction. “Hopefully this study can present appropriate solutions according to the goals of sustainability,” she said hopefully.
