Prof Dr Ir Umi Laili Yuhana SKom MSc from the Department of Informatics Engineering delivering a scientific oration on RPL-based technology
ITS Campus, ITS News — Differences in students’ abilities in understanding lessons are often a challenge for teachers in the classroom. Responding to this, the 218th Professor (Gubes) of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Prof. Dr. Ir. Umi Laili Yuhana SKom MSc initiated an adaptive learning innovation based on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The innovation from his research results was expressed through his scientific oration for his inauguration as an ITS Professor entitled Software Engineering as a Catalyst for Digital Innovation for Quality and Sustainable Education . In his oration, the professor who was inaugurated on February 20 presented a solution in the form of an application that allows students to learn with an approach that is tailored to their respective abilities. This application is designed so that students can understand the material by discussing, answering questions, and interacting according to their capacity.
The woman who is familiarly called Yuhana explained that her idea was born from her concern about the challenges faced by students today. She highlighted problems such as low self-confidence, difficulty maintaining focus, and gadget addiction that affect the learning process. “This problem needs to be addressed through technological innovation that is not only efficient, but also has a positive impact on students’ character and skills,” she said.

To develop the application, the lecturer of the Department of Informatics Engineering used a mathematical approach that adapts to human thought patterns. The methods applied include Classical Test Theory, Rasch Model, Linear and Quadratic Methods, and Adaptive and Branching Method . “This approach allows the system to automatically select and adjust questions based on student abilities, so that the learning process becomes more accurate, inclusive, and effective,” he explained.
From the application of this method, two superior applications were born, namely AUGGO and I-Assessment. AUGGO is an Augmented Reality (AR) based application designed to facilitate spatial learning for elementary school students. Meanwhile, I-Assessment is present as an android-based online exam application that allows the assessment process to be carried out automatically, so that the results given are in accordance with student competencies objectively.
Not only focusing on the world of basic education, this innovation is also developed to support the work system in the ITS environment. This master’s graduate from National Taiwan University has also created two ITS internal digital systems, namely MyITS WorkTime and MyITS Single Sign On (SSO). MyITS WorkTime is used to record employee work time and location, while MyITS SSO simplifies access to various campus digital services through one integrated account.

All of these innovations are part of Yuhana’s real contribution to Sustainable Development Goal point 4, namely Quality Education. According to Yuhana, the development of adaptive software can help teachers in encouraging student involvement, while shaping their character and competence. “Not only is it efficient, but it can also improve students’ morale and skills to compete healthily,” said the Tulungagung-born woman.
Yuhana’s dedication in developing educational technology has made a great contribution to ITS, the community, and national education policy. He hopes that this development will continue and involve more parties. “Cooperation between all lines must be encouraged so that students have adequate facilities with easy access to all information,” he concluded.
