The ITS Library is back with a hybrid workshop entitled “Exploring Research and Publish⁷ with IEEE Explore” which was successfully held on Tuesday, 25 June 2014 in the Bibliotek Room on the 2nd floor of the ITS Library.

It is hoped that this workshop can equip ITS researchers with effective strategies for conducting research and publishing on internationally reputable platforms such as IEEE Explore.

This event presented two experienced speakers in their fields, namely: Prof. Riyanarto Sarno (Lecturer & Researcher, Department of Informatics Engineering, FTEIC, ITS) and Richard Chandra (International Area Manager, APAC, IEEE). Both provide valuable insights about the world of research and publication, plus surefire tips for getting into international journals!

Prof. Ryan, Prof.’s nickname. Riyanarto opened his session by emphasizing the importance of intention and prayer in starting research. He quoted a prayer in Arabic which means, “O Allah, I truly ask You for useful knowledge, halal sustenance, and accepted deeds.” Prof. Riyan emphasized that research is the implementation of useful knowledge.

Prof. Riyan, invited participants to instill the value of mindfulness in the research and publication process. “Don’t let us focus on pursuing publications until we get tired halfway through, especially if we get rejection from reviewers,” he advised.

Facing the “Valley of Research Death”, Prof. Riyan shared effective tips to keep researchers enthusiastic and never give up. “Formulate the proposal sharply, don’t be discouraged by the reviewer’s input (make it a trigger!), and ensure smooth funding,” he said. Regarding publications, he suggested prioritizing generic research results (Q1) for publication, while specific results are more suitable for patent applications.

Meanwhile, Mr. Richard, Richard Chandra’s nickname, enthusiastically appreciated the high enthusiasm of the ITS academic community in utilizing IEEE Explore. “The trend in using IEEE Explore services at ITS is very encouraging, almost on par with Singapore and Malaysia. Access to standards at ITS is also very high,” he said. However, he also highlighted a unique phenomenon at ITS, namely searching activity which is higher than usage. This shows the high level of curiosity and need for more specific information among the ITS academic community.

The hybrid workshop became interactive thanks to the moderation of Mrs. Indri Sudanawati Rozas. He invited active participation from participants with interesting questions and dynamic discussions. Good mastery of the material³ also helps answer participants’ questions, making the event effective and full of enthusiasm.

Hopefully, the knowledge we gain from this activity can be useful and inspire us all to continue working and innovating! (onemore)
