[Surabaya, December 2, 2024] – Mentoring the establishment of Halal Centers in Islamic boarding schools, namely the Halal Center of Wahab Hasbullah University (UNWAHA), Tambakberas Jombang and the Halal Center of K.H. Abdul Chalim University (UAC), has been completed by the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology in collaboration with the Representative Office of Bank Indonesia, East Java Province, Monday (2/12/2024). This activity has been held for 7 months, from May 1 to November 30, 2024. This activity began with a number of trainings with participants being prospective Halal Center administrators from the two universities, including halal supervisor training; halal product process assistant training; and Halal Center management training, starting on Monday (27/5) to Friday (31/5) in the Padi Room, Research Center Building, 3rd floor. This training activity was opened by Mr. Iqbal Reza Nugraha, Deputy Director of Bank Indonesia, East Java Regional Representative Office and Mrs. Anninda Mughniy Rahayu, manager of PT. ITS Tekno Sains Academy. And then, technical assistance was carried out until November 30, 2024.
Head of UAC Halal Center, Idris, M.Th.I stated that this training provided new insights for the UAC Halal Center team. According to Idris, his colleagues in the team are already familiar with the concept of halal-haram because UAC is a religion-based campus. “Although friends from the UAC campus are already familiar with the concept of halal and haram, for the halal regulations applied in Indonesia, there is still a lot to learn, one of which is from this training,” he said.
After the Halal Center Decree was formed, the Head of the UNWAHA Halal Center, Dr. Amin Awal Amarudin, S.Si., M.Si., together with his team began to foster fostered MSMEs who would be assisted in mentoring in managing self-declare halal certification. In fostering MSMEs, Amin explained that the mentoring of MSMEs was assisted by students. “Students are involved, in addition to helping lighten the workload, also as a means to learn to go down to the community,” he said.
Head of the ITS Halal Study Center, Prof. Setiyo Gunawan, stated that Islamic boarding schools are one of the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia that have a strategic role in producing quality generations, both in terms of spirituality and intellectuality. Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia have developed into institutions that not only focus on religious education, but also have a strategic role in community development, including the people’s economy.
“Law Number 18 of 2019 (Article 4) concerning Islamic boarding schools emphasizes the position of Islamic boarding schools in three (3) main functions, namely: education, preaching, and community empowerment. In a modern context, these functions can be optimized by making Islamic boarding schools have a number of potential strategic roles in strengthening the national halal ecosystem, especially as a center for developing the halal industry,” added Gunawan, who is also the Director of the Halal Product Industry KDEKS East Java
