The Nawasena Team from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) has secured 1st place in the 2024 International Student Design Competition. This competition, organized by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA), based in the United States, took place online from November 2023 until the results were announced in June 2024.
The team, consisting of seven members, designed an innovative ferry called NV Queen Nneka. The name “Nneka,” which means “Great Mother” in the Igbo language (Nigeria), reflects the vision of this ferry to be the first safe and viable ferry on the Niger River in Nigeria, as well as a pioneering ferry model for the future in the region.
Quito Abian Iqtarib, the General Manager of Team Nawasena and also the leader of the competition, explained that the ferry was specifically designed to operate on the Niger River, an area actively producing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). “We designed this ferry to be environmentally friendly, especially for the river environment,” said Abian, a student from the Department of Naval Architecture, in a press release on Tuesday (July 9, 2024).
He further elaborated that the team’s design aligns with the country’s goals of producing CNG, which is more environmentally friendly compared to diesel. The ferry is also equipped with solar panels for some of its equipment, but the majority of its power comes from CNG.
“We don’t want this ferry to create large waves that could disrupt smaller fishing boats nearby,” added Abian. All preparations for the competition were conducted online, including technical meetings, webinars, and the submission of design results. This year, the WFSA collaborated with the Interferry Conference 2024, where Team Nawasena and other winners will be invited to Marrakesh, Morocco, from October 26-30, 2024, to present their designs and attend the award ceremony.
Abian shared that one of the main challenges the team faced was the time difference with the competition organizers in the United States.
“We often had to attend webinars at midnight. Additionally, as I am currently in Germany for a joint degree program, I had to communicate a lot with the team to ensure good coordination,” he said.
After the competition, Team Nawasena conducted both technical and non-technical evaluations to improve their performance for future competitions. Abian hopes that Team Nawasena ITS will continue to achieve its goal of becoming a research team that contributes innovations to the maritime world.
“I hope Nawasena will be a platform for team members to grow technically and managerially, developing together and succeeding together,” he concluded with hope.
