In the case of a vessel which is undergoing steady motion at slow speeds, that is where the ships weight balances the displacement upthrust without the significant contribution of hydrodynamics lift forces, the component of calm water resistance can be broken down into the contribution shown in below figure. In addition to these components there is of course the air resistance and added resistance due to tough weather.
To evaluate the resistance of a ship, the designer has several options available. These ranges, as shown at below figure, from what may be termed the traditional methods to advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods. The choice of method depends not only on the capability available but also the accuracy desired, the funds available and the degree to which the approach has been developed.
