the team get assistance for Smart Nozzle project

The student team from Electics submitted an innovative creation at the 2023 Student Creativity Program (PKM) event. As an effort to respond to the problem of the distribution of fuel subsidies that have not been evenly distributed throughout Indonesia, the team presented smart and targeted solutions through copyrighted works in the form of systems Smart Nozzles. This system is designed to detect the validity of vehicle subsidies based on the number plate and type of vehicle. This idea received wide acceptance and appreciation from the PKM judges so the team received funding to implement their innovative solution. This support will enable them to continue developing their product, conducting further trials, with the hope that product implementation will prove fruitful.

This team consists of five people consisting of two students from the Informatics Engineering Study Program and three students from the Electrical Engineering Study Program (Electics). The team leader, Alvado, explained that this innovative idea came from a member of the Electrical Engineering students. Receiving full guidance and support from their supervisor, Dini Adni Navastara, S.Kom., M.Sc., this team admits that they have learned a lot and are trying to give the best results in developing their creations. The close cooperation between the two fields of study is a strong foundation for designing and realizing a sophisticated and beneficial Smart Nozzle system for society.

The Smart Nozzle system that is delivered offers the Faster R-CNN method which is able to process images captured by the camera in real-time. A fuel station will place 2 cameras on the right and left sides to capture the number plate of a wheeled vehicle and the type or name of the vehicle. The captured image will then be processed using the Faster R-CNN method so that the validity of the subsidy can be detected. There is a Solenoid Valve component that functions like a switch, it will open when subsidies are detected. Furthermore, a component called Flowmeter will calculate the amount of fuel subsidy that can be given. The results of this system analysis will be displayed via a PC and HMI control which can be seen by BBM officers.

“Methods for Object Detection generally use CNN, here we bring ideas and innovations to use Faster R-CNN (the latest generation of Fast R-CNN development) which allows efficient real-time detection and then also applies segmentation to the vision model to improve prototype performance,” said student who is fondly called Valdo, the team leader.

Implementation of this innovative idea started in mid-June 2023. The team managed to obtain funding of IDR 10 million from the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology (DIKTI) as well as support from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS). With these funds, the team has approximately three months to realize the innovations of their creations. After the implementation phase is complete, this creation will compete in the Gemastik event, a National PKM competition that will showcase the best innovations from all over Indonesia.
