Lobuk Village is a village located in Bluto District, Sumenep Regency, East Java. Although it has won the title of independent village and 4th place as the best village in East Java in 2021. Although it is included as an independent village, there are still 503 poor families in Lobuk Village (BPS Sumenep Regency, 2023). Most of these poor families are small fishermen, who depend on the catch from the use of angghas to meet their income. Angghas is a term from the fishermen of Lobuk Village, as a means of catching fish that resembles or is similar to a bagan but is equipped with a small fish aggregating device measuring about 2 x 1.5 meters. The fish aggregating device is a means to become a “home” for fish so that fish can gather and make it easier to catch.

Angghas fishermen will get additional income if there are tourists/visitors who use their angghas facilities as fishing spots. Currently, the use of angghas as a fishing spot is still carried out during the day, and at night it is used by the angghas fishermen themselves, to catch fish. However, with simple fishing equipment, the fish catch is still not optimal.

Angghas is fishing equipment for fishermen in Lobuk Village

Main Problems

The main problems faced by fishermen in Lobuk Village include:

Production Aspect: The use of simple fishing equipment results in low fish catch capacity. Fishermen cannot determine the type of fish to be caught, so the catch is a mixture of fish with a small amount.

Management Aspect: Fishermen cannot control the fishing distance effectively, so there is competition in collecting fish. In addition, they are not yet familiar with technology that can help effectively in catching fish.

Multicolor LED and Low-Cost GNSS as a Solution

To overcome this problem, a team from the ITS Marine-Earth Science and Technology Research Center led by Prof. Nur Cahyadi offers a solution in the form of improving production and management aspects. The technology introduced is a low-cost multicolor LED lamp and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). This technology is designed to attract more fish around the angghas, thereby increasing the quality and quantity of the catch.

Installation of Low-Cost Multicolor LED and GNSS Technology

The stages of activities in this program include:

Socialization Workshop: Introduction of low-cost multicolor LED and GNSS lighting technology to fishermen.

  1. Manufacturing Training: Training in manufacturing and installation of multicolor LED and GNSS lights.
  2. Technology Testing: Testing multicolor LED and GNSS lights with fishermen in shallow seas.
  3. Technology Installation: Installation of multicolor LED and GNSS lights at fishing locations.

In addition, ITS also held a mentoring workshop to provide knowledge about the maintenance and troubleshooting of this new technology, as well as strategies for developing marine tourism for fishing spots. Active participation from Pokdarwis Lobuk is highly expected for the success of this program.

With this program, it is hoped that fishermen in Lobuk Village can increase their fish catches so that the income and welfare of the local community will also increase.
