ITS STKK with IMO in Efforts to Solve World Biofouling Problems

ITS, through the STKK Research Center, is active in continuing to contribute to solving various issues related to marine and earth. One of them is participating in “The 2nd IMO-Glofouling R&D Forum on Biofouling Management” in London, UK.
The forum organized by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) on October 11-14, 2022, contains many activities such as the presentation of research results and studies by selected paper participants, discus of the latest technological developments to deal with biofouling, as well as the introduction of policies and regulations.
As the representative of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. I Ketut Aria Pria Utama, M.Sc from the ITS STKK Research Center, and two of his colleagues proposed research results. The paper was declared the selected paper in the main session of the R&D Forum activities.

The paper entitled “An investigation into the development of hydrophobic antifouling paint to minimize biofouling growth on ship hull” focuses on Antifouling Coating to minimize biofouling growth on ships.
Biofouling (adhering of marine animals) to ships is an issue that needs attention. The movement of biofouling between countries by sea has the potential to cause biofouling to become invasive so that it can endanger the sea and human life.
This is the background for IMO launching the IMO Glofouling Partnership Project program in 2018. 12 countries were selected as Lead Partnership Countries (LPC), of which Indonesia is a member.
STKK Research Center strives to continue actively researching and developing technology to address biofouling problems for a safer Indonesian sea.
