Campuses that actively participate in informing and supporting local or regional governments in local climate change disasters or risk early warning and monitoring are critical fundamentals of community resilience. Climate change has increased the frequency and severity of weather-related disasters, necessitating the use of early warning and monitoring systems. Campus frequently works with local governments to provide critical data and expertise, enhancing the region’s ability to anticipate and respond to climate-related risks. They become valuable partners in improving early warning systems, ultimately safeguarding lives, property, and the environment, by providing research, data collection, and monitoring resources. This collaborative approach guarantees that local and regional governments are better equipped to deal with climate-related disasters and develop proactive measures for constructing a resilient and sustainable future. The following are ITS’s initiatives to inform and support governments in local climate change disaster during 2022:
A. Discussion on East Java Disaster Priority between MKPI and OPD
FGD on the development of the East Java Disaster Management Plan (RPB) Document
A focus group discussion (FGD) on the development of the East Java Disaster Management Plan (RPB) Document concerning disaster priority, root cause determination, and strategic concerns was held on Monday, August 1, 2022. This event was attended by Disaster Management Capacity of National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), Regional Agency for Disaster Management (BPBD) of each Regency/City in East Java, Ready Alert, regional or local government agency (OPD), River Basin Development Agency (BBWS), to Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (FPRB).
B. MKPI ITS Highlights Strategic Issues for East Java Disaster
Pentahelix coordination meeting
The BPBD of East Java Province hosted a Pentahelix Coordination Meeting to improve disaster readiness through the prevention and readiness sector. Researchers from the ITS Disaster Mitigation and Climate Change (MKPI) Research Center were also present and highlighted strategic challenges and problems in the disaster field in East Java that were derived from FGDs with OPDs in East Java. This event will take place in Malang on Wednesday and Thursday, October 26 and 27, 2022.
C. ITS Conducted Disaster Mitigation in Semeru Refugee Village
ITS KKN Abmas Team with Pasirian Village officials
Pasirian Village in Lumajang Regency is at risk for the effects of two natural disasters: an erupting volcano and a tsunami. Seeing this, the ITS Community Service (KKN Abmas) team arrived in Semeru refugee village to carried out disaster mitigation for all components of society. In September 2022, socializing activities for all age groups were carried out. Because it is critical to introduce probable disasters early, socialization activities are an inseparable aspect of disaster mitigation. Other disaster mitigation initiatives include the construction of evacuation signs for both man-made and natural disasters that could occur there. Although Pasirian Village is part of Mount Semeru’s third ring, it is still vital to mitigate volcanic eruption disasters because it serves as one of the refugee villages.
