Giving the public free access to open spaces and green spaces is a powerful and inclusive initiative that benefits both communities and the environment. These open areas serve as safe spaces for individuals and families to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, connect with nature, and engage in physical activities that promote physical and mental health. People can assemble, relax, and enjoy outdoor recreational activities. Campus only improves the quality of life for local inhabitants by assuring free and open access to these green areas, but also advocate for the importance of environmental stewardship and equitable urban planning, resulting in vibrant, healthy, and accessible communities for all.
ITS provides open and green spaces in the form of campus forests, parks, to urban farming areas. The ITS campus has a forest area with a forest vegetation cover of 222725 m2, or 13.3% of the overall campus area, as shown on the ITS master plan map. The city forest is divided into numerous sections, including Gebang Forest and ITS Stadium, ITS Roundabout, ITS Dormitory, Forest behind Environmental Engineering-Civil Engineering, Informatics Engineering Forest, and ITS Buncitan Campus Forest. Additional green open places besides campus forests include:
- Plant vegetation at ITS is in the form of open gardens that may be enjoyed by the general public, such as in Alumni Park, Triangle Park, Roundabout Park, parks in departments and corridors spread across all campus areas, and parks in departments and corridors spread across all campus areas.
- Vertical gardens, which use plants that hang and are easier to flourish in Surabaya conditions, can be found in various buildings. However, the area of vertical gardens is not currently included in the calculation of plant vegetation area.
- ITS Sukolilo, ITS Manyar, and ITS Cokroaminoto Campuses have garden space administered by various departments.
- ITS Eco Urban Farming land for organic farming that serves the academic community’s vegetable needs.
- Buncitan Campus land is currently in the form of open land used for live laboratory agricultural activities from the Department of Biology and the ITS Industrial Argo Center.
