ITS Green Action: Fostering Climate Resilience through Coastal Ecosystem Restoration
In response to the climate crisis and the detrimental impact on coastal ecosystems, the Ministry of Environment and Disaster of ITS Student Executive Board (BEM) organized a vital environmental restoration initiative known as “ITS Green Action.” This project, involving mangrove and seagrass planting at Labuhan Mangrove Ecotourism in Bangkalan, aimed to raise awareness among the ITS Student Family (KM) about climate crisis challenges. By focusing on activities that contribute to blue carbon restoration in coastal areas, BEM ITS engaged volunteers from KM ITS to participate in mangrove and seagrass planting.
The ninth edition of the International Seminar on Ocean and Coastal Engineering, Environmental and Natural Disaster Management (ISOCEEN) featured a diverse lineup of domestic and international experts, addressing the theme of “Promoting Ocean-Coastal Engineering Innovation and Collaboration for Sustainable Development.” Over the two-day event, discussions revolved around harnessing the potential of ocean and coastal areas to advance sustainable development goals. As a response to global challenges, ISOCEEN 2021 emphasized the need for global collaboration to effectively address these issues, inviting keynote speakers from various parts of the world.
This initiative aligns with the objective of supporting and organizing events aimed at promoting the conservation and sustainable utilization of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and marine resources, fostering a collaborative approach to marine engineering and environmental preservation.
The webinar “Indonesia Green Maritime Toward Net Zero Emission,” hosted by the Alumni of the Faculty of Marine Technology at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (Alfatekelits), underscores the significance of addressing climate change challenges in the maritime sector. It emphasizes the critical role of the maritime industry in global carbon gas emissions, accounting for 2.2 percent, as indicated by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory report from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia.
The webinar highlights concerns regarding exhaust emissions from ship engines, including pollutants like Nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and sulfur oxides, which pose health and environmental risks. The event aligns with the objective of supporting or organizing initiatives aimed at promoting the conservation and sustainable utilization of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and marine resources, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in the maritime sector.
In an effort to combat the escalating deforestation issues plaguing Indonesia, the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Sepuluh November Institute of Technology (ITS) initiated a green campaign in commemoration of National Earth Day. The campaign aimed to instill a sense of responsibility and awareness regarding the importance of environmental protection in Surabaya.
By collaborating with student volunteers, BEM ITS distributed three hundred tree and plant seeds, including trembesi trees, tomatoes, eggplants, chilies, and cabbage, to visitors at Taman Flora. This proactive engagement in tree planting aligns with the goal of supporting and organizing events aimed at promoting the conservation and sustainable utilization of the environment’s vital resources, fostering sustainable practices in Surabaya.
