1. Preamble
Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) is committed to fostering a sustainable and environmentally conscious campus that integrates principles of social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and economic resilience. As part of the global commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ITS aims to lead by example in promoting sustainability and social impact through education, research, and campus-wide practices. This policy underscores ITS’s dedication to a future where sustainable development principles guide our collective actions and aspirations.
2. Policy Statement
ITS pledges to embed sustainability across all facets of campus life, aligning our efforts with key SDGs, including quality education, clean water, affordable and clean energy, climate action, and responsible consumption and production. We are committed to maintaining an inclusive, safe, and environmentally responsible campus that reflects our values and supports sustainable growth. This policy promotes ethical resource use, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and biodiversity conservation while reducing single-use plastics and managing resources responsibly. By fostering an eco-conscious campus, ITS aims to contribute meaningfully to the achievement of the SDGs, ensuring a positive impact on both local and global communities.
Chapter I – Economy and Welfare
a. ITS ensures non-discrimination or violence based on religion, ethnicity, race, and gender in both student admissions and human resource management.
b. ITS guarantees that academic activities and community life are conducted with equality, humanity, and fairness.
c. ITS ensures no forced labor, slavery, child labor, or human trafficking practices.
d. ITS guarantees transparency and fairness in the use of third-party labor.
Chapter II – Social Life
a. ITS ensures academic freedom within campus life, including the dissemination of research findings.
b. ITS provides accessible, relevant, and applicable learning grounded in sustainable development for all stakeholders.
c. ITS guarantees access for community learning that is meaningful, relevant, and applicable, rooted in sustainable development, available to all stakeholders.
Chapter III – Environment
a. ITS guarantees water resource conservation and recycling efforts.
b. ITS follows government regulations on water quality monitoring within campus and the management of wastewater and waste.
c. ITS promotes waste management efforts with the principles of 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) through waste sorting, waste reduction, recycling, and reuse.
d. ITS ensures involvement in reducing pollution to rivers and seas by promoting domestic wastewater management with treatment and recycling efforts.
e. ITS guarantees the environmentally friendly and sustainable management of hazardous waste materials.
f. ITS is committed to minimizing single-use plastic or plastic bags from procurement, distribution, to disposal within the ITS environment.
g. ITS promotes a smoke-free campus environment.
h. ITS ensures that no invasive alien species enter the campus environment.
i. ITS undertakes activities to identify, monitor, and protect IUCN Red List species and species on the national conservation list impacted by campus activities.
j. ITS participates in managing vulnerable ecosystems, such as wetlands, mangroves, and peatlands.
k. ITS considers local biodiversity in campus physical development.
l. ITS ensures energy efficiency and conservation by:
- Implementing energy efficiency programs through selecting and using energy-efficient, environmentally friendly equipment.
- Promoting the transition to renewable energy for use on campus.
- Ensuring lighting is used only in spaces lacking adequate natural sunlight.
- Strategically placing lighting without compromising its function.
- Limiting air conditioning usage and maximizing ventilation.
- Setting air conditioner temperatures to 24-25 degrees Celsius.
- Efficiently using fuel for official vehicles.
- Encouraging technology use for energy efficiency.
m. Adhering to energy efficiency and conservation principles in construction and renovation.ITS encourages reducing paper use with a paperless office policy, along with reducing plastic, styrofoam, and similar materials that contribute to waste.
n. ITS promotes the provision of clean and healthy canteens on campus, ensuring all canteens use environmentally conscious ingredients sourced ethically from farming and fishing.
o. ITS fosters a comfortable campus environment through tree planting and open green spaces.
