Photonics Engineering field is a branch of engineering discipline, that deals with the implementation of principles in Optics in developing integrated optical / photonics systems to solve daily lives.
These integrated optical / photonics systems can be utilized for various industrial monitoring systems, systems for defence / military applications, diagnostics and therapeutics applications in healthcare, as well as to be used in agriculture and farming, i.e. for increasing yield, quality assurance and authentication of agricultural / farming products.
An integrated optical / photonics system usually developed and constructed of dedicated light source, optical components for manipulating the light beams, an suitable optical detectors. Dedicated electronic data acquisition and control systems usually used as additional necessary components.
The use of light as one component of electromagnetic waves gives several advantages, in terms of accuracy, precision, non-contact measurement capability, as well as immunity to any electromagnetic interferences.
Important roles of optical light in many aspects in human daily lives has been unarguable, even these important contributions are not yet realized by most people. UNESCO in 2015 had celebrated the International Year of Light (IYL 2015) to recognize the importance of enhancing global awareness to the importance of light and light-based technologies in advancing sustainable developments and providing solutions to global challenges in problems of energy, education, agriculture, and healthcare(c.f. https://www.light2015.org/).
As continuation of the success of worldwide IYL 2015 celebration, then UNESCO declared 16 May as the International Day of Light – IDL, to commemorate these important roles of light in advancing human lives. This date, 16 May, was chosen as Theodore Maiman firstly announced his invention on LASER generation principle. This invention was historically proven to revolutionized the advancement of light-based technological developments, which can solved many problems in this modern society (c.f. https://www.lightday.org/).
