El Nino is a phenomenon of warming sea surface temperature (SML) above normal conditions that occurs in the central Pacific Ocean. This SML warming increases the potential for cloud growth in the central Pacific Ocean and reduces rainfall in the Indonesian region. In short, El Nino triggers drought conditions for the Indonesian region in general. On the other hand, La Nina is the opposite phenomenon to El Nino. When La Nina occurs, it reduces the potential for cloud growth in the central Pacific Ocean and increases rainfall in the Indonesian region in general. The extreme weather caused by El Nino and La Nina can affect infrastructure, agricultural systems and energy around the world. The El Niño that occurred from 2014 to 2016 caused drought in Canada and Asia, which led to crop failures and undermined the food security of more than 60 million people, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization UNITED NATION.
Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG), In 2023 El Nino has a 50-60% chance and is predicted to last until the end of 2023. Based on BMKG weather modeling, El Nino is predicted to occur starting in August 2023. BMKG urges Ministries/Agencies, Regional Governments, related institutions and the whole community to be more ready and anticipative of the possible effects of the dry season, especially in areas experiencing sub-normal characteristics of the dry season (dryer than usual), namely anticipating drought and forest and land fires. Beginning in 2023 President Jokowi gave directions regarding the threat of drought and forest and land fires. The President ordered regional leaders who have the potential for karhutla and drought to be aware of the El Nino phenomenon that will occur.
Given the 2015 – 2016 drought in various regions in Indonesia, along with the increase in the El-Nino phenomenon at that time. As a result, drought hit 16 provinces covering 102 districts/cities and 721 sub-districts in Indonesia. The President revealed that the losses due to forest and land fires in 2015 reached IDR 220 trillion and the health problems caused reached 504,000 people, especially children affected by ISPA (Upper Respiratory Tract Infection). Another impact caused is the loss of habitat for biodiversity and damaged forests estimated at 2.6 million hectares. The President revealed that the spread of forest and land fires in 2015 was also due to a lack of early prevention
