The team from the Department of Instrumentation Engineering, Faculty of Vocational Studies, ITS succeeded in securing a bronze medal at the 2022 PIMNAS event.
The PKM-KI (Innovative Work) Team of the Instrumentation Engineering Department FV ITS who won the bronze medal in the presentation category at the 35th Pimnas
ITS Campus, Vocational News – The 35th National Student Scientific Week (Pimnas) 2022 series of annual events by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) through the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas), officially ended, Saturday (3/12 ) night. To be proud, the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) managed to rank 3rd on the closing night of the prestigious event which was held directly at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM).
The PKM-KI team from the Instrumentation Engineering Department FV ITS consisting of Irga Merdiansyah, Mohammad Jailani, Rafly Zaka Rulloh, Aisyiah Anjellica Nurul Izza and Nabiilah Aziizah Tjandra created the Bemisia Tabaci Smart Trap innovation. Irga Merdiansyah as the team leader explained that the innovation originated from reports from edamame farmers in Jember district that the main pest that attacks edamame is Bemisia Tabaci/whitefly.
Irga said, from the case study location, namely in Jember district, it was found that the Bemisia Tabaci pest (whitefly) can cause a decrease in crop yields of up to 80% or until the worst case, farmers can experience crop failure. The most common method used by farmers is by spraying liquid pesticides but this can cause pesticide residues to adhere to the edamame yield, as a result in several countries refusing to export edamame crops. to catch the pest,” he added.

However, the farmers are also worried that if the device is installed in the middle of a rice field it will result in theft so that the Bemisia Tabaci pest trap will be installed with a motion sensor or sensor to detect human movement and a siren so that the device can be safe even in the middle of a rice field.
The working principle of this device is to use an Ultrasonic Wave transmitter which is turned on from noon to evening with a frequency of 200-300 Hz. This can disturb the sleeping whitefly. Furthermore, at night lights with light spectrum waves of 570-590 nm can attract whitefly until they are trapped
Irga said that the journey of the PKM competition was very long, lasting approximately 1 year, starting with the submission of proposals which was held in January and the PIMNAS PKM Competency competition in December. Of course it is not easy and requires struggle because it is a long process and requires high commitment, “added Irga as the team leader.
Under the guidance of ITS Instrumentation Engineering Department lecturer Mr. Ir. Brian Raafi’u S.ST, M.T , this team finally won a bronze medal in the PKM-KI presentation category at the 2022 PIMNAS event, last Saturday (3/12), at Muhammadiyah University Malang (UMM) “The impression that can be taken from the PIMNAS competition is very happy because this very long struggle has produced something extraordinary. The hope is that next year, of course, we can win gold in the same category.”, said Irga with great pride and hope.
