Wednesday, December 12, 2018. The Department of Mechanical Indusry Engineering, Faculty of Vocational of the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember Surabaya held a guest lecture with the theme “Industry Revolution 4.0 as Manufacturing and Renewable Energy Technology Development” with Speaker Prof. Tegoeh Tjahjowidodo from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. This Guest Lecture was held with the aim that DTMI students prepare themselves to face the world of Production with the ongoing Industrial Revolution.
The presence of the fourth industrial revolution that is currently taking place has indeed caused pro-contra in the community. On the one hand, some people argue that the advancement of artificial intelligence in the industrial sector is a necessity that cannot be stopped. However, it cannot be denied that this industrial revolution is actually a threat to mass unemployment in the future.
In mathematical calculation of profit and loss, the use of robots in the manufacturing industry has a very significant impact on cost efficiency. In addition to being able to operate for 24 hours without stopping, entrepreneurs also do not need to mess around with increasing labor costs every year, as well as workers’ demonstrations that have an impact on productivity levels.
In the end, consumers will be the ones who benefit most from using robots. With more efficient production costs, the price burden that consumers must pay to buy goods will also be cheaper. However, the reality is certainly not as simple as the mathematical calculations above.
“DTMI students should not only be spectators and victims of technological disruption, but as the younger generation must begin to prepare themselves to be the main actors of the fourth industrial revolution” Jack Ma, founder of the Alibaba Group, said that programming languages would be the language of the future. This is the motivation given by Prof. Tegoeh Tjahjowidodo to AKNS students.
“Globalization does not only require young people to speak foreign languages, but also learn how to make computer and smartphone applications. Simply put, “kids age now” must be educated to be a prospective technopreneur in the future and DTMI students have begun to be prepared to face the challenges of this industrial revolution, “concluded Dedy Zulhidayat Noor, ST., MT., Ph.D as Secretary of the Department.
