Amidst the growing competition in game development in Indonesia, Trident Dev, a team of students from the Computer Engineering department at ITS, has emerged victorious in the Legion Game Masters 2024. With their innovative game titled “Escape Plan 2000,” the team, consisting of Kenanya Keandra Adriel Prasetyo and Reza Ali Nirwansyah, successfully captured the judges’ attention while competing against numerous professional game developers. Trident Dev was founded by Kenanya Keandra Adriel Prasetyo during high school. Although the team has often undergone member changes, their commitment to continuous innovation remains a top priority. With experience gained from participating in various competitions, Trident Dev has continued to grow and evolve, ultimately deciding to participate in this year’s Legion Game Masters.
“Our motivation for participating in Legion Game Masters is to enhance the team’s portfolio and bring honor to ITS in the world of game development,” explained Kenanya, who plays the role of Game Artist as well as Programmer.
Behind their success lies a simple idea that resonates deeply with the everyday lives of many. “Escape Plan 2000” addresses a common concern faced by many people: how to avoid paying Rp2,000 to supermarket parking attendants. The game invites laughter with its relatable premise while offering a challenge through stealth gameplay, where players must evade the parking attendant while retrieving a yellow motorcycle without being detected. With a simple drag-and-drop mechanism, players must strategize to complete their mission of escaping from the parking attendant.
Reza Ali Nirwansyah, the team’s Game Designer, noted that this idea stemmed from personal experiences shared by many Indonesians. “We wanted to create a relatable game where players could connect with the story and enjoy light yet challenging gameplay,” explained Reza.
The process of creating this game was not without significant challenges. One of the main difficulties was how to translate the idea of escaping from a parking attendant into an engaging and logical gameplay mechanism. After several trials, the team decided to utilize a drag-and-drop mechanic that was easy to play yet still engaging.
The Moment When Trident Dev Team Won the Championship
“We only had 10 days to complete this game,” Kenanya recalled, noting the limited time frame set by the game jam concept. After three days of conceptualizing the idea, the remaining seven days were dedicated to development and polishing.
When announced as the first-place winners, excitement erupted among the team members. As a team still comprising students, this victory felt even more special as they managed to outperform many competitors, including professional developers. However, this win is not the end of their journey. Trident Dev has ambitious plans to release “Escape Plan 2000” to the global market and continue participating in other competitions.
“We aspire to develop an Indonesian game development studio recognized worldwide,” Kenanya stated with optimism.
Not only content with this victory, Trident Dev is ready to release their game to the public and continue creating, inspiring other young developers. One of the most memorable messages they wish to convey to the next generation is, “The key to a great game is the simplicity of the idea. If you can explain the game’s concept in one concise sentence, it indicates that your game has the potential for success,” said Reza. Trident Dev is now preparing to face greater challenges, with big dreams to contribute to the development of the Indonesian game industry on the international stage.
