Physical Facilities for Interdisciplinary Research

The Fourth Industrial Revolution represents the current shift towards automation, digitalization, and data-driven decision-making. This transformation is driven by integrating cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and cyber-physical systems, which are reshaping industries, economies, and daily life. As these advancements continue, they will have a profound impact on research and technological innovation.

To support these changes, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) provides dedicated physical facilities for interdisciplinary research teams through its Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM). ITS has established state-of-the-art research centers that bring together expertise from various disciplines, facilitating collaboration in key areas such as Manufacturing, Transportation, and Logistics; Disaster Mitigation and Climate Change; Energy and Mineral Resources; Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technology; and Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology. These research centers integrate faculty members, researchers, and students from multiple departments to conduct interdisciplinary projects that address real-world challenges.

For example, the Manufacturing, Transportation, and Logistics Research Center combines expertise from Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Environmental Engineering to develop solutions that are directly utilized by the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Research & Technology, local governments, the railway industry, and the Ministry of Marine Affairs & Fisheries. Similarly, other research centers provide facilities for STEM-based interdisciplinary research, supporting both fundamental and applied sciences.

ITS continuously expands its research infrastructure to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. More details about physical facilities for interdisciplinary research can be found in the 2023 ITS Research Funding Guidelines.
